Keyboard & mouse browser shortcuts

The major web browsers share a number of common keyboard/mouse shortcuts. Some I find extremely useful, some, not so much.

A few that I use every day are -
  • Ctrl+F4 - close current tab.
  • Ctrl+TAB - move to the next browser tab (Ctrl+Shift+TAB to do it in reverse)
  • Ctrl+Left Click - open a link in a background tab (open in a new tab but don't switch to that tab).
  • Shift+Left Click - open a link in a new window.
  • F5 - refresh the current tab. Clicked the wrong icon when collecting mailer credits? Refresh and try again.
  • Ctrl+F5 - refresh the current tab bypassing the browser cache - ensures you're getting the latest version of the page.
  • Ctrl+1 - move to the first browser tab.
  • Ctrl+a - select all.
  • Ctrl+c - copy selected.
  • Ctrl+v - paste copied.
  • Ctrl+z - undo last action.
  • End - go to bottom of page. Useful when it takes a week to scroll past all the 'sales copy' to get to the continue link at the bottom of the page.
  • Ctrl+Shift+T - reopen closed tab. Too many tabs open and you accidently closed the wrong one? No problem. Throw a Ctrl+Shift+T at it (right-click the mouse on a tab also gives you a reopen option)

A more complete list.

It's always a good idea to delete your cache. Apart from the large number of files impacting on your computer's performance, old copies of pages can cause issues. If you can help it, never delete your cookies. If you do delete the cookies, you'll find out very quickly how much useful information they contain. When 'support' tells you to 'clear your cache and delete your cookies', definately clear your cache, but try from a different browser or computer instead of deleting your cookies. Then, if necessary, only delete cookies for the site where you are having problems.

Other Functions

Ctrl+P - Print the current page.

Ctrl+S - Save the current page to your computer.

Ctrl+O - Open a file from your computer.

Ctrl+U - Open the current page's source code. (Not in IE.)

F12 - Open Developer Tools. (Requires Firebug extension for Firefox.)
